Category: Getting to Know You
Well hello! To Everyone!
As you know my name is Danielle, and I’m 25 years old. I live in Washington State, but I was born in Maui Hawaii. I have an older brother and three half sisters. I have a very big family on both sides. I’ve been totally blind for about 5 years now. And I have a guide dog named Lilly, She is an English black lab, and she is the cutest dog anyone could ever want! Well I thought I would try to describe my self, to everyone so they would be able to get to know me and have an idea of what I looked like, and other stuff like that! Smile!
Ok here I go! Well I have really soft shoulder length brown hair, with some blond highlights, I have an oval shape face, and I have blue-green eyes, with really long eyelashes. I have a cute button nose, and a dimple on each cheek. I have full lips, and strait teeth. I’m not pasty white but I’m not a really dark olive color either. I’m from Hawaii and I get really dark if I was living there but I’m not so I guess you can just say I’m in the middle. I’m 5’1 and with a nice curvy figure. I have a tattoo on my upper right arm. The tattoo is of 2dolphins, in the shape of a hart. I can say I have been slacking on being active in sports but I have been rock-climbing lately so I don’t feel to bad about that. Smile! I do love to sing but I’m going to keep that to myself.heheheh Smile! I like to wear nice close but I also just wear genes and a nice shirt sometimes. I don’t have any special brand of close, but I do like the color blue. I also like silver and some of the light colors. I like to dance if I have the chance! I don’t go out to clubs but if I was with some friends and they wanted to go I would have no problems with that! Some times I just like to get down and dirty. Hehhheheh big smile! I am a sentimental and caring type of person. Now don’t think I cry about everything because I don’t. I just like to show my appreciation for my friends and family. Or show them how much I care and think about them. Because like that one saying goes, Treat people the way you would like to be treated. I can be very stubborn and out spoken. But I know that in some way I can be very shy too. But on the other side of things I have been told I like to talk a lot. hehehhe Smile! So I guess it really depends on where I am and what I’m doing.
My favorite Flower is? Roses, daisies, Lilies, and sunflowers. My favorite Holiday is? Thanks giving, Christmas, and Valentines. I don’t know if I can add my birthday but I like it anyways. Grin! My Favorite ice cream flavor and toppings! Rocky road, vanilla with Sprinkles, mint chocolate chip. Oh! Man I’m making me want one now! Darn! Smile! My favorite soft drink is! i had to cut this in to two parts so here is the rest.
Well I will now try to go in to how I became blind. I’ll try not to make it to long. Smile! My life has been very interesting so far. It’s a very long story. I can start with the fact that when I was born I had an eye condition called Anaridia. And then from that when I was three years old I had an experimental surgery on my eyes to fix the Anaridia. Well let’s just say that it didn’t work as it was suppose to so instead of having just one eye condition I got two more called glaucoma and cataracts. So while I was growing up I had about 17 to 19 more eye surgeries to try to fix all of the problems I had with my eyes. So while I was having all of these eye surgeries I could still see pretty well for someone who was visually impaired
I also had problems with school because I went to so many because my stepfather was in the F.A.A. So my reading, spelling and math have always been pretty bad. I can tell you that I went to 12 different schools in my life. I was lucky that I graduated at all. The last school I went to was the Kentucky school for the blind. That school was the best one I’ve ever gone too. I also did a lot of sports; I’ve done Swimming, Track, Wrestling, and Cheerleading. I’ve done other things athletic like Rock climbing and skiing.
My hobbies are Singing, Dancing, and reading.
Well after I graduated I moved to Seattle and tried to start my life over. Well it was a year later when I lost my vision. And I’ll just tell you now that I never expected to lose my vision the way that I did. I don’t think anyone wants to wake up in complete darkness and not know why! I don’t think the doctors really new why I had lost my vision. I think it was something unexplained to them. And so one day! I’m able to see something’s and the next day I’m waking up in complete darkness. I don’t think my brain really under stood what had happened to me. So I went to the eye doctor and they kind of looked around and said, well I don’t really see anything that looked different before. So they said lets do a cornea transplant and then you’ll be able to see again. Yeah Right! That didn’t happen like they said it would.
So after that surgery I had another one that was experimental and they thought that would work too. Well it’s been about 5 years now and there’s nothing that they can do for me. So here I am writing about myself. I want everyone to know that what I write on here is things I want to share with everyone? I just want everyone to be able to learn more so they can understand me. And that going blind isn’t easy for anyone! But I know that it takes a strong person to over come going Blind.
The first year I was really depressed and then one day I had the radio on and I hurd Amy Lee From
Evanescence talking on the radio. The station said if we wanted to talk to Amy Lee we needed to call in and so I did. She was going to sing one of her hit songs. And this is what happened! That day! The Reason why Amy Lee is my hero! Is because, her music just touched me in such a special way. I don’t think the song (Bring me to life) was out yet But I still hoped that something would happen and I could see again. Well ten months later I was listening to the radio and Evanescence was on! So I called in and while I was waiting she sang the song (Bring Me to life) I started to cry. Why? Well the words just touched me so deep in side of me it hurt. I still didn’t want to believe that I would never be able to see again. So of cores I held a lot of my emotions in side. So the song (Bring Me to Life) It Really helped me get everything out.
When Amy Lee was done singing the radio station started to answer calls. I tried to stop crying but it was really difficult. So when it was my turn I just started crying again. I tried to tell her that her song helped me so much that I didn’t know how to describe it. I think she was surprised that I was crying. Well to make a long story short. She invited me to her concert that night. I just couldn’t believe it. So I went to the Evanescence concert. And guess what! Amy Lee Dedicated the song (Bring me to life) to me. I was so shocked I just stood there looking like a dork. And the next day I was able to meet her in person. She was really nice and so was Ben. I have a really good picture with her I just have to find it. Amy Lee’s music is a work of art put in to words. Every word meant something to me! I just have to say that my life is a lot better because of hearing that song. Well it’s been almost 5 years now sense I’ve been blind and I can say I’ve had some pretty good times just being myself. But I can say there are some days when I wish I could see my family, friends or see my loveable guide dog Lilly. I’ve had my guide dog Lilly for all most three years now. She is the best dog anyone could ever ask for. And she has helped me so much through the years. I have to tell you it’s not so bad being blind once you get use to it. There have been times where people just can’t be leave that I’m so independent. Oh! Yeah! And some people at my last job and in other places don’t really be leave I’m really blind. He He Smile! Why! Well I realized that I do so many things like a sighted person I don’t even know I’m doing it. So there I’m done! Shoow that was a lot of writing! I’ll try next time not to write something so long. Smile!
Well talk to you all soon!
Danielle, I think it took a great deal of courage for you to write that post.... you go chicka!!!
Yes it must have taken a lot of courage to write that post especially about the personal and private things. I have heard of some people seeing quite well the day before and waken up and cant see anything. I myself lost my sight when I was 1 year old so I cant remember ever being able to see at all. I do have some sight but it isn't very usfell. I can see colours especially the colour red. I have always been able to see red. I am a serious and nervous person. I have mild epilepsy and depression. Michelle
Hi Danielle, welcome to The Zone, and thanks for your honesty. I'm Lou in Maryland. Feel free to ask anybody around here for help. You might get some off-the-wall responses, but I suspect you figured that out by now from reading the boards.
Lou
Greetings, Danielle
Congratulations to you for having been able to deal with it the way you did. You sure went through alot of stuff but, you dealt with it rather well.
All the best with all your future endeavours.
Enjoy the rest of your day
Hanif
hey guys i just wanted to tell you thanks for the responces. Smile!
awesome post Danielle. I also woke up one day and couldn't see. I went from perfect vision, driving, working as a nurses aid, to one morning none at all. it's scary. so congrats to you for not letting it get you down. I never did let it get to me! more people need to just deal with it, instead of keeping it all inside! hugs, chicky!
Hi! Shea! thank you so much for leaving me a post. that really means a lot to me. smile
Ah don't know what I've have done. I had some or lots of sight as a child, so nothing drastic happened like just waking up one day. It went slowly, so I had time to adjust.
Great post.
I had sight as a child but we knew it would diminish slowly which it has been... but I am use to it... so... I do have a little sight though... awesome post...
